How to Find Customers with Social Media

Social media can be overwhelming. It has its challenges, but with the right strategy you can use social media to find many potential new customers for your business. Social networks are bursting with users, making it easy for businesses to reach out to target audiences.

Once you have developed a social media strategy, you can use your time online to the best advantage. Millions of people are on social networks like Facebook and Twitter at any given moment. If you can reach only a handful of people who match your prospect description, you will see growth for your business’ customer base.

The first thing’s first: only focus on where your customers are spending their time online. If your customers only use Facebook, then that is where you need to keep your focus. Knowing where your target audience hangs out makes it easier to cultivate your strategy and reach the most people.

So, how do you find out where your customers and prospects spend their time online? Here are three simple ways to get the answer:

Just Ask

If you already have customers, they are a great place to start. You can simply ask them if they are using social media, what sites they use and how they like to engage with businesses online. You can do this through an email if you have a list of customer contact information.

In your brick-and-mortar location, you can engage with your customers in person and ask if they would mind answering your social networking questions.

Your customers will like that you are reaching out to them. It shows that you care about making those connections outside of your business.

Set Up Google Alerts

You probably use Google alerts to stay current with industry news (and if you do not, you should!), but it is also a good way to see where your customers are online. Set a Google Alert to keep track of anything that pops up online that is related to a specific topic.

For example, if you make children’s toys, you can do a search for “kids’ gift ideas” and see where the results take you. There will probably be a lot of results for Pinterest boards or mom blogs. That tells you that setting up a Pinterest account is a good idea for your business.

Search on Social Networks

Most social networks offer users a search function. This lets you search to see if any of your customers are using the channel or if there are potential customers to reach. You can simply enter the names from a customer list, if you have one, and see if they are there.

You should also do a search for topics that are relevant to your niche, for industry leaders or other brands within the industry and competition.

The search function helps you see if the social network is a viable source for your business to find customers. If your customers are there, if other businesses similar to yours are there and if there are good prospects on that network, then you should be adding it to your social strategy.
